COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio’s recent State of the State address emphasized the importance of child care and education, but a national report revealed the state’s low ranking in preschool spending. The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) highlighted disparities in access, quality, and funding, placing Ohio 43rd in total reported preschool spending.
While recent increases in state-level funding were noted, inadequate funding remains a widespread issue. Ohio’s preschool enrollment is relatively low compared to national averages, with only half of the benchmarks for quality preschool education being met. Challenges include insufficient teacher qualifications, large class sizes, and staff-to-child ratios that fall short of recommended standards.
