Toledo Non-Profit Puts on Financial Literacy Class For Children Facing Poverty

< 1 min read

TOLEDO, Ohio-“Kids with Cents” is a program by Toledo non-profit Neighborhood Properties Inc. aimed at children from low-income backgrounds. The class teaches financial literacy to children living in supportive housing. Manager Shalonda Powell emphasizes the importance of exposing children to different paths beyond poverty.

The unique aspect of the program is that it’s taught by peers – children themselves. This creates a relatable and engaging learning environment. Parents like Tiana Parren appreciate the early exposure to financial education, which was lacking in traditional schooling. The program ran for eight weeks with two-hour sessions each week, and plans for similar future classes are underway. Powell sees this initiative as an investment in the children’s future, providing them with essential skills for financial independence.
