AKRON, Ohio-Akron Public Schools recently hired Alan Jones, a retired 33-year veteran of the Akron Police Department, as its new Director of Public Safety. In his role, Jones will oversee the safety of students, staff, and visitors across all APS properties. He manages a team of about 60 personnel, including school resource officers and security staff, and oversees the district’s security technologies. Jones, who was previously a detective with the Street Narcotics Uniformed Detail (SNUD), brings extensive community engagement experience from his career in law enforcement. Despite a distinguished career with several accolades, Jones has faced two disciplinary incidents, including an accidental discharge of his service weapon and an incident where he struck a handcuffed suspect. These incidents were considered during the hiring process, but Jones was deemed the best candidate for the role due to his deep ties to Akron and his commitment to school safety. He will earn $118,000 on a one-year contract and intends to maintain a visible presence in community activities despite the demanding nature of his new position.
