Why are Lorain students missing school? New data shows it’s more than skipping class

Anxiety. Hunger. Transportation gaps. A sense of disconnection. These are just a few of the reasons why some Lorain students aren’t making it to class—and why solving chronic absenteeism in the district has proven to be so complex. At Friday’s Board of Education meeting, Executive Director of Wraparound Services Steven Sturgill gave an update on the district’s efforts to improve attendance. The latest numbers show progress in some schools, but setbacks in others.
