April 3rd, 2024-COLUMBUS, Ohio-Ohio’s Lt. Gov. Jon Husted is advocating for the “Social Media Parental Notification Act,” aiming to shield children from harmful online content. The proposed law mandates online platforms like social media and online gaming sites to obtain parental consent before allowing users under 16 to access their services.
Companies must verify the user’s age through various methods and send written confirmation of parental consent. Husted highlights concerns about children’s exposure to distressing content and social media addiction, emphasizing the necessity of parental oversight. If enacted, companies will have 90 days to comply with the legislation.
