TOLEDO, Ohio-Toledo Public Schools (TPS) received a one-star rating in the graduation category of the 2024 school district report cards from the Ohio Department of Education, indicating it is not meeting state graduation standards. School leaders attribute this issue to chronic absenteeism, which has worsened since the COVID-19 pandemic. Heather Baker, TPS’s executive director of community engagement and student support, highlighted that many students feel discouraged about their ability to graduate due to low credit accumulation. The chronic absenteeism rate for TPS was around 40% in 2024, primarily among high school students.
