Akron Voters to Consider Issue 27 Tax Levy to Build new North High School, Fund General Operations

AKRON, Ohio-Akron Public Schools (APS) is seeking voter approval for a tax increase to fund district operations and replace the aging North High School, which has become overcrowded, particularly with students from immigrant communities. The proposed levies, appearing as Issue 27 on the November 5 ballot, would address both the district’s operational needs and the cost of building a new North High School. The district’s CFO, Steve Thompson, explained that Ohio’s school funding system is based on a “boom-and-bust” cycle, where levies do not adjust to rising costs over time, leaving schools struggling with outdated funding.
