March 27th, 2024 -COLUMBUS, Ohio- Several cases in Ohio have shed light on concerning deficiencies within the state’s child welfare system, resulting in the tragic deaths of numerous children. Since 2015, 128 children have died while under the custody of public children services agencies, with systemic failings highlighted, including the use of abusive private behavioral health residential facilities. Cases such as Ma’Khia Bryant’s police shooting, the arrest of Pammy Maye for the death of her foster son, and the sentencing of John and Katherine Snyder for the murder of their adopted son Adam Snyder underscore the severity of the situation. Instances of neglect, abuse, and inadequate oversight within the child welfare system have led to preventable tragedies, prompting calls for systemic reforms to ensure the safety and well-being of children in state custody.
