NEW WASHINGTON, Ohio-Toni Schafer and Christa Swanger, fourth-grade teachers at Buckeye Central, are competing for the title of America’s Favorite Teacher, with a chance to win a $25,000 prize, a trip to Hawaii, and a feature in Reader’s Digest magazine. Schafer, currently leading her group, hopes to advance in the competition, with the wildcard round on Thursday determining the quarterfinalists.
Schafer, a 10-year teaching veteran, credits her inspiration to her elementary teachers and mentor Lynn Kocher. She prioritizes building positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents, believing trust is essential for effective teaching. If she wins, Schafer plans to start a college fund for her children and fulfill projects with her husband.
