Summit County Teens get Hands-on Experience Through Summer Youth Employment Program

AKRON, Ohio-The county’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) has engaged nearly 800 teens with over 300 local employers this summer. Participants work for eight weeks and can earn up to $2,400. Ne’iya Irvene, a teen working at Akron’s Hair Geek salon, is using the program to advance her career in hairstyling. The program pairs teens with mentors like Hair Geek’s owner, Sapreea English, who provides hands-on experience in customer service and salon operations. English values the mentoring aspect of the program, enjoying the opportunity to guide local youth. Irvene credits SYEP with helping her gain confidence and essential skills, leading her to secure a full-time position at the salon.
