LEWISTON, Ohio-Indian Lake Schools recently hosted a successful S.T.A.R.T. (School Transportation Active-Threat Response Training) session for bus drivers from several districts, which many participants described as the best training they’ve experienced. This specialized training focused on preventing attackers from boarding buses and responding to life-threatening scenarios. Pat Smith, the IL Director of Transportation, highlighted its relevance, noting the limitations of standard ALICE training for bus environments. During a practice drill, an instructor simulating an attacker was accidentally injured, demonstrating the program’s practical application. First aid was administered by local bus drivers, and thankfully, no passengers were hurt.
