Mayfield Third-Graders Learn About Nature Via The Culturally Popular, But Otherwise Little-Known Axolotl

April 12th, 2024-MAYFIELD, Ohio-Jennifer Hancock’s third-grade class at Center Elementary School in Mayfield, Ohio, has embraced a fascination with axolotls, a type of salamander found in Mexico’s freshwater lakes. The students are captivated by these creatures, partly due to their popularity in the game Minecraft and their selection as the Girl Scouts’ mascot for cookie sales.

Hancock, the class teacher, saw an opportunity to teach her students about nature and its wonders through the axolotl project. Despite being a technology coach for the Mayfield School District, Hancock’s transition to teaching has allowed her to incorporate nature into her curriculum.
